By Press-Tribune staff After the second week of football games, the Nampa Optimist Youth Football program is considered a success. The new program -- the second youth football program in Nampa -- serves nearly 250 kids between 7 and 12 years old. There are 11 teams, including four flag football teams for 7- and 8-year-olds, according to Ken Wilson, commissioner of the Nampa Optimist sponsored program. Games will be played weekly at West Middle School between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Some teams leave town and play in other communities as part of the statewide Optimist program that sports 376 teams. The Optimists fund the weekly program, which costs $500 to pay for referees, an EMT and other expenses related to a day's worth of football action. The volunteer organization also raised the start-up funds for uniforms and equipment. |
The Optimists hope to be the beginning of a strong, ongoing youth program here
in Nampa with support from the Optimist board, coaches, parents and
players. "The Nampa program owes a lot of thanks to the Boise Optimist Youth Football organization for all its help and support in getting our organization up and going," said Kenny Wroten, Optimist Youth Football board member. "We even had some of the experienced coaches from other teams that have established programs helping some of our coaches during the games." For more information about the program, contact Ken Wilson at 880-1099 or Kenny Wroten at 371-7387. Businesses or persons interested in the sponsorship program should call Jeff Lake at 250-6837. |
