Congratulations to Optimists for service award

SUMMARY: The Nampa Optimist Club was an excellent choice for the annual Mayor’s Service Club Award.

NAMPA -- We don’t envy Nampa’s mayor when it comes to choosing which of the city’s organizations to honor with the annual Service Club Award.
There’s a long list to consider, including the likes of the Countryman’s Club, Nampa Jaycees, Lions Club, Rotary Club, Soroptimist Club, Woman’s Century Club, the Civic Center Auxiliary and the Kiwanis Club. And all do a multitude of good works that make passing them over difficult at best.
But we wholeheartedly support the choice of the Nampa Optimist Club by Mayor Tom Dale as this year’s recipient. The club has a long history of supporting children’s programs and special projects like collecting letters for Santa from the post office at Christmas and writing replies.
But the organization’s crowning achievement has been raising $90,000 to build the Optimist Football Park on Birch Lane behind the new Birch Elementary School.
The club has long run a football program that includes 25 to 30 flag and tackle teams of children ages 7 to 12 -- both boys and girls. The problem was finding enough fields for practices and games.
The new park, expected to be ready for play in August, will take care of that. It will include seven football fields, bleachers, a concession stand and a building for equipment storage.
It’s a challenging project, but one that will greatly improve the city’s quality of life.
It’s also typical of the Optimists.
So congratulations to club members for your award. You deserve it for dreaming big and then delivering.
