Optimist jamboree a success | |
Around 400 local players take part in football eventBOISE -- The annual Youth Optimist Football Jamboree invaded Boise State University’s Bronco Stadium again Saturday. For the second straight year, Nampa made quite an impact on the event. Nampa Youth Optimist Football -- now in its second year -- had 17 football teams and about 400 players take part in the massive scrimmages along with about 50 cheerleaders. "We’re still the new ones on the block, so it’s nice to see how we compare with the other programs," said Kenny Wroten, the public relations director of Nampa Youth Optimist Football. "Plus this gives us the chance to work out all the kinks. The biggest thing of all is to have fun -- that’s what we were all there for." |
Optimist Youth Football is for players ranging from ages 7 through 12.
The 7- and 8-year-old players take part in flag football, while the
older players play in four progressive tackle football leagues. Players from Optimist Youth leagues throughout the area competed. Wroten said the group included teams from Boise, Meridian, Kuna, Mountain Home, McCall, Hailey and Wood River. "Nobody was too worried about keeping score at this deal," Wroten said. "It’s just a matter of getting all the kids to play. With Optimist Football, everybody gets to play. We all seemed to be pretty successful and everybody was pretty happy with the result." Wroten said the league began its practices earlier this month and should get their seasons going in the next couple of weeks. |
